André Ethier (b. 1977, Toronto, Canada; lives and works in Toronto, Canada) draws from both modernist painting traditions and folk imagery. Working primarily in oil on panel, he builds his compositions through loose, gestural mark-making and an intuitive approach to color and form. Ethier paints freely without preliminary sketches or a formal plan. His paintings often combine simplified figures, landscapes, and invented scenes, resulting in compositions that feel at once direct and constructed. Ethier’s imagery moves between observation and imagination, incorporating elements of fantasy, myth, and everyday life. Figures, animals, and hybrid creatures appear within loosely defined environments, rendered with a deliberately raw and improvisational hand.
He holds a BFA from Concordia University.
Ethier has been exhibiting at the Gallery since 2005. He has had solo exhibitions at Paul Petro Contemporary Art, Toronto (2021); Harper’s Apartment, New York (2016); and Honor Fraser, Los Angeles (2010), among others. He has been included in group exhibitions at Clint Roenisch Gallery, Toronto (2021); Projet Pangée, Montreal (2021); Journal Gallery, New York (2016); Galerie Bertrand & Gruner, Geneva, Switzerland (2012); Neon Parc, Melbourne, Australia (2011); MANETAMED, Brooklyn (2011); and Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles (2010), among others.
