Jovi Schnell

Round Trip

January 6 - February 7, 2004

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 10, 6 - 8 pm

Derek Eller Gallery is pleased to present new paintings and drawings by Jovi Schnell.

Jovi Schnell’s exhibition entitled “Round Trip” consists of saturated/vividly colored canvases and drawings whose intricate and mystifying imagery could be described as semi-psychedelic fairy tales. Drawing from sources including, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, Walter Tevis’ The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Ms. Schnell’s new work takes a bold figurative leap to a place where human characters possess shape shifting abilities to morph with botanicals, fractured architectures, and vehicles, as if to pictorially symbolize their own psycho-alchemical states while communing with nature. Her versions of The Garden of Eden and The Tower of Babel merge celestial forces, fantastical biological forms, and complex sci-fi metropolises with minor creatures such as grasshoppers, ladybugs, snails, and spiders to remind one that these supernatural vignettes are indeed earthly.

Jovi Schnell’s work has been seen in numerous gallery and museum shows. Upcoming exhibitions include “Open House: Working in Brooklyn, at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and a large mural for the Stedelijk Museum Bureau, Holland. This will be her third solo show with the gallery.
