EJ Hauser (b. 1967; Peru, IL; lives and works in New York City and Upstate New York) develops their work through a process of drawing, repetition, and layering. Their compositions begin as drawings that are revisited and reworked multiple times, with each iteration refining gesture and form until the image becomes both fluid and deliberate. Built through successive layers of color, their paintings often retain traces of earlier marks, creating surfaces that vibrate with underlying tones and shifting visual energy. Hauser’s imagery draws from close observation of the natural world, including animals, trees, and atmospheric conditions, which are translated into a personal visual language of recurring symbols and forms. These elements, at once graphic and loosely referential, hover between iconography and abstraction, taking on a totemic or symbolic presence.
They earned a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Hauser has been a visiting artist, instructor and lecturer at Columbia University, New York (2020, 2018, 2017); Hunter College, New York (2019); Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore (2016); and Yale University (2015), among others.
Hauser has been exhibiting at the Gallery since 2019. They have had solo exhibitions at Haverkampf Leistenschneider, Berlin, Germany (2023); Parrasch Heijnen, Los Angeles (2023); Anton Kern, New York (2022); and Regina Rex, New York (2017), among others. They have also participated in group exhibitions at Anton Kern Gallery, New York (2025); Orwell’s Garden, Brooklyn (2024); Tops Gallery, Memphis (2022); The Pit, Los Angeles (2021); PALFREY, London, UK (2021); Olympia Art, New York (2021); and Shrine and Sargent’s Daughter’s, New York (2019). In the Fall of 2026 Hauser will lead an Atelier at the NYSS.
